Somebody's Daughter

Somebody's Daughter, by Shelley Stoehr

Drunk Sex or Date Rape?

38% of girls aged 14-17 will be raped.

92% know their assailant.

90% of rapes occur when either the assailant or the victim is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

However, 84% of young men polled who committed date rape did not believe they had committed a rape. They thought it was just drunk sex.

So, even though nearly half of our teenaged daughters will be date-raped, more than three-quarters of their assailants will think it was just “drunk sex”.

Why the confusion?

Somebody’s Daughter combines multiple points of view to tell the chilling events of a party gone wrong when the adults have all checked out of their children's lives. … Casey Keenan, 15, and her two best friends attend their first kegger. The girls get drunk, and friend Rain Rikowsky, 16, is brutally raped. As if that weren’t bad enough, Casey's mother has been hired to write a book about the rape and the events leading up to it. And friend Kayla is still in love with the party's host, Brian! The girls -- especially Casey -- must reach deep inside to uncover the truth about the party, and to finally come to terms with themselves and horrifying experience of that night.

I call my girls “Outsider Girls” because the girls in my head tend to be outside the mainstream. Although they are not the popular girls, or even the average girls, they have a lot to say. Some of the girls who write here also appear in novels or short stories of mine, while others have only begun to raise their voices loud enough to be heard. They have all originated in my biweekly blog, www.outsidergirlswrite.blogspot.com, a.k.a. OGW. Meet the grrlz!
